About the Museum Exhibition History Founders and Friends Get Involved Education Gift Shop

One of Marilyn Logsdon Mennello’s most heart felt dreams was to have the Smithsonian American Art Museum create an exhibit that would project Earl Cunningham into the forefront of 20th Century American painting and with the “Earl Cunningham’s America” exhibit she would not have been disappointed.

The exhibition was viewed by more than 185,000 visitors in three venues during the tour. The exhibit opened at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC on August 10, 2007, and displayed the array of works in the main floor galleries.

Smithsonian Exhibit ReceptionOn Friday, In early September, a contingent of more than sixty-five Friends of the Mennello Museum members attended a special reception hosted by SAAM including a reception at the museum followed by dinner hosted by Jim and Dale Seneff at “Evermay,” a privately owned Federal styled mansion, in Georgetown.

Press coverage included an outstanding review in the New York Times (April 4, 2008, Karen Rosenberg), articles in the Washington Examiner, Antiques & Arts Weekly, Washington Post, Washington Times, and Newsweek as well as a live remote spot on the television program “Live with Regis and Kelly.” In conjunction with the exhibit,  the cable channel, “Ovation” featured the Earl Cunningham documentary during the month of April.

From the Smithsonian, the exhibit moved to the American Folk Art Museum in New York City then to Cooperstown, New York and finally at the Mennello Museum.

Earl Cunningham’s America was organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition is made possible by generous support from Darden Restaurants Foundation; the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation; the Arts and Cultural Affairs Office of Orange County, Florida; CNL Financial Group; Bright House Networks; Lockheed Martin; the City of Orlando; and Friends of The Mennello Museum of American Art. The exhibition’s tour is supported in part by the C. F. Foundation, Atlanta.
